Dressed in His Splendor

There is a profound silence that only ancient things can command. My wife and I recently found ourselves standing beneath a canopy of giant redwoods that seemed to scrape the very floor of heaven. The air in California felt different, heavy with the scent of pine and the weight of centuries. We journeyed into the heart of the Muir Woods National Monument, a cathedral of living history where some redwoods have stood watch for over a thousand years.

The forest was more than just a collection of trees; it was a sanctuary of stillness. The soft, needle-carpeted earth acted as a natural acoustic sponge, swallowing every footfall and whisper. Only the rhythmic pulse of a nearby stream broke the quiet. In that space, words felt unnecessary. We simply walked, allowing the grandeur of the surroundings to speak of a power far greater than our own.

God often chooses breathtaking beauty to serve as His signature. Whether it is a jagged mountain vista or the amber glow of a sunset, these are not mere accidents of nature; they are deliberate masterpieces. Yet, standing among those giants, I was reminded of a peculiar phrase in Psalm 103:5. In the original Hebrew, it reads, “Who satisfies with good your ornaments.”

While we often think of ornaments as superficial decorations, the biblical imagery suggests something deeper. To God, the towering redwoods are like jewels placed upon the earth to display His magnificence. But the scripture tells us that God desires to do the same for us. He is not interested in mere “self-improvement”; He wants to adorn our lives with His truth and grace, dressing our character in the same splendor He gave the forest.

Even better yet, the ultimate display of God’s splendor is not found in a forest, but in a Person. Jesus Christ emptied Himself of His heavenly majesty to walk among us, eventually dying so that we might truly live. Now, He invites us to be His living ornaments that reflect His splendor. By walking with Him and relying on the Holy Spirit, we become the canvas for His character. As Romans 8:29 promises, God is tirelessly at work, shaping us into the very image of His Son.

A redwood does not reach for the clouds overnight; it is a masterpiece of time, patience, and roots. In the same way, God is crafting a lasting beauty within all His children that transcends the seasons of our lives. He invites us to pause, to listen, and to stop striving. Let Him be the Gardener of your soul, adorning you with His character until your life becomes a living ornament—a breathtaking splendor of the grace, strength, and beauty of Jesus for all the world to see.
