Christ’s Church Host

We are a family, and like a family, we all pitch in.

We call those who serve at Christ’s Church HOST instead of VOLUNTEER because a volunteer is someone who comes in and fills a need based on their convenience and interest, but a host is someone who takes responsibility to care for and serve those in their home. While Christ’s Church of Oronogo is not the exclusive house of God, it is a unique space that many have chosen to belong to. It is our church home where we sing together, eat together, pray together, and sit under the Word of God. We have chosen to make this place the community we invest in as the people of God, and we do all of this because of our own experience of God as the only true source of life.

Therefore, those who identify as a Host have determined to be a part of making this place a home for others. They are uniquely invested in helping church family regularly have a place to share in God and his church, but also for creating a space for those who come and aren’t connected to the family at all.

Each Host works like one who is receiving someone into their own home. The house is clean and organized. The dinner is prepped and ready. The table is set and chairs have been added. The host provides instruction and is ready to adapt to each changing moment. This is all done because Jesus is at the table, and the Host is inviting the next person to take their seat with him. In light of this, there are four values of being a good host:

We won’t host people into our home and usher them to the table if we ourselves aren’t enjoying the presence of God. The worship service is an intentional gathering that the Church has practiced since its inception because it provides for us avenues of experiencing God, and being renewed in him. We must be committed, not just to serving those who walk through the door, but share in the fellowship of God with them.

A Host can serve in many different ways and they need to be ready for the task. Some will open the door and greet the visitor, others are in the kitchen prepping the food, some are scrubbing the toilets, and others are setting the table – the point is that we must come prepared for whatever role we will play as a Host. To not be prepared, or to be preparing when someone arrives, means we have distracted them from the whole reason they are here to begin with.

Plans change, tasks are forgotten, accidents occur, but each Host recognizes that the point is to care for and serve the one who has come into their home. We don’t serve tasks, but people, and we are ready to adjust in each moment to serve and care well.

Hospitality is what Hosting is all about. We are generous and engaging. We go the extra mile with our time and we inconvenience ourselves for the sake of the other. We provide others with the most comfortable seat, the best portion of food, the last piece of cake. We take away distractions and have a plan of care.

All of this is for the single purpose of helping each person recognize the true person of honor that sits at the table – Jesus. We are trying to get them close to him. We are trying to open up avenues of conversation and experience. We are trying to get them to join his family, and enjoy fellowship with us.

Because we have experienced completeness in Jesus, we are God’s family and care for those in his home.
