Our Personal Advocate

The Holy Spirit is personal and present! Our Advocate truly is a gift that makes a daily difference in our lives.

Before Reginald Heber died in 1826 he wrote the words to a hymn that countless people around the world would sing one day. The first verse will likely be very familiar to you even today.

“Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!”

This song came to mind as I was reading John 14:16-17. In a passage about the coming of the Holy Spirit are these verses. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you.

Did you notice how many personal pronouns Jesus used to describe the Holy Spirit? In this short passage Jesus uses “him” four times and “he” once. That’s five times in one verse. I’m not really into grammar, but to me it’s significant that Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit in a personal way, not as an “it.” And he does it repeatedly.

God in three persons – The Father is personal, Jesus the Son is personal and The Holy Spirit our Advocate is personal!

So how personal is our Advocate? He helps us. Like when he intercedes for us, Romans 8:26. Or like when he teaches us and reminds us, John 14:26. He even gives each of us gifts to be able to serve others as the body of Christ. How is he able to help us? Because he knows us. How does he know us? Because he is always with us and even dwells within us. Now that’s close. That’s personal.

The passage also indicates that the Holy Spirit is with us forever. He doesn’t come and go, but is constantly there with us. We can count on him!

The Holy Spirit is personal and present! Our Advocate truly is a gift that makes a daily difference in our lives.
