My musical ability is almost zero. Growing up, I never learned to play an instrument. I can’t read music. I love to sing, but I’m pretty sure the Lord is the only one who enjoys it besides me. Yet despite all my lack of musical ability, I have a deep love of music.

The song Goodness of God wrecks me every single time I hear it. I don’t care if I am driving down the road, in the kitchen cooking dinner, or in a worship service on Sunday morning; when this song comes on, the lyrics melt me. If you ever get a chance to hear Cece Winans’ version, it is my absolute favorite. She sings it with such power and confidence, like a person who has walked the walk.

I love you, Lord
For your mercy never fails me

Goodness of God by Bethel Music / CeCe Winans

Mercy was a hard concept for me to accept when I was younger. I was a rule follower through and through. One day, I let my mom know that it wasn’t fair that she had dished out a light punishment for my younger sister, who had done something awful. I remember Mom turned and said something like, “Just because I have the right to punish her doesn’t mean I am going to do it how you want it done. We are also trying to love her.” She was right. They had mercy on my sister because they loved her, not because she deserved leniency.

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.

Titus 3:5

All my life you have been faithful
All my life you have been so, so good

Reflecting on your own life is strange, isn’t it? Some memories are so vivid, and others are lost. Often, I wonder why I did the things I did and why things happened to me. I can’t know the why behind all of the questions from my past, but I do see a common thread weaving together my story. There were times when I strayed. And God pulled me back. There were times I was fully committed to Him. And God was there. There were times when I was scared, and I remember my only solace being in the Lord. God has been weaving my story together for a long time, just like He has been weaving yours together too. And He will always point us back toward Him, no matter where we are. He has been so so good to all of us.

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.

Psalm 34:8

I love your voice
You have led me through the fire

I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for God’s voice leading me. He has protected me in so many ways throughout the years that I can’t even count them. Years ago, I distinctly heard the Lord tell me to do something. It was something that I did not want to do at all. But I did it. Looking back on that one decision, I know that my life was forever changed because of His voice and direction. And I am forever grateful.

God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; He does great things beyond our understanding.

Job 37:5

Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
With my life laid down, I’m surrendered now
I give you everything

God’s goodness is running after me? Running? That’s not walking or moving toward or drifting in my general direction. Running is quick and intentional. Runners usually have a purpose. God’s goodness is running after me, pursuing me. No matter if I’m standing still, running toward Him, or even running the other way.

Surrendering is never an easy thing to do, but it is so very important. If you don’t surrender to anything or anyone, you are saying you can control everything. If you want something done, do it yourself. That’s what we are taught in our culture. Right? Wrong. We actually have no control in this world. We can maybe control ourselves, and that is about it. We need the One who is in control, though. Surrender is acknowledging that we need Him.

In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:6

Maybe you have a favorite worship song or verse that speaks to you. I challenge you to reflect on it, and dig into the reasons why you love it so much. I guarantee you will find a good God who is pursuing you.
